  • Sir John Stanley

    Sir John Stanley (1846-1931), was Kate Stanley’s brother. He was educated at the Royal School Armagh, studied classics at Trinity College Dublin and returned to the Royal School as Assistant Master. Probably due to his father’s fading health he initially helped out in his solicitor’s practice in Armagh, before qualifying as a barrister.

    He later became a Judge in India and served there for some time before retiring to London. John Stanley from Armagh to Allahabad appeared in the 2016 edition of History Armagh p24-27 and can be viewed at History Armagh 2016

  • Catherine Stanley

    Catherine Stanley(1837-1920) (known as Kate) was my great grandfather’s first cousin. On 11th September 1866 she married Thomas North in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh. Thomas North was a coal mining entrepreneur from Basford, Nottinghamshire which probably went some way to explaining the presence of Richard Banks Bond

     the Sheriff of Nottingham who witnessed the marriage. The Day the Sheriff of Nottingham came to Armagh: the Kate North Story appeared in the 2017 edition of History Armagh p14-17 and can be viewed at History Armagh 2017

  • Alexander Lane

    Alexander Lane pistured here with his wife Dorothea Stanley merited two articles in the History Armagh magazine.

    Alexander Lane RN MD (1803-1877) was a ship’s surgeon in the Royal Navy. He led an adventurous life and kept a detailed record of his life at sea. Alexander Lane RN MD: the Adventures of a Naval Surgeon was the second article I wrote and appeared in the 2019 edition of History Armagh p15-18 which can be viewed at History Armagh 2019

    The first article covers his time ashore when he tried to make a go of being a surgeon in Armagh after his marriage and before later returning to sea. Alexander Lane: the Man who Galvanised Medical Practice in Armaghappeared in the 2018 edition of History Armagh p11-14 and can be viewed at History Armagh 2018
